Our Humanitarian

We were discussing the earthquake and tsunami in Japan over dinner last night and Elise was becoming increasingly concerned for our well being.

"Is that going to happen to us?"
"maybe. but hopefully not." (I'm a little too honest sometimes)

She then said "we don't need to worry-we'll be safe in Iowa." A reminder that there is very little going on other than the occasional tornado and river flooding-we will still be west of the Mississippi.
Yesterday Elise's class had a bake sale to raise money for the World Wildlife Fund to help save endangered animals. This sparked a total humanitarian effort on her part and she became thirsty for more causes. She displayed very strong emotion for the events in Japan and began collecting everything she owns to send overseas. Much like the scene in Clueless when Cher donates her skis and caviar to the Pismo Beach Disaster fund, Elise scoured our home looking for any item she deemed worthy of donation. Much to my surprise this included a half full bag of pine nuts and some wilted spinach.
It became evident after some time that these things just wouldn't cut it-wilted spinach didn't seem as appetizing after an hour or so. She came up with a new plan:
"Let's just send them all our money and wine."
To which Mike replied: "that's a great idea-two of mommy's favorite things." :-/
